block

I am suffering from a bad case of block.

I have writer’s block. Badly.

I also have reader’s block. Very badly.

I can already tell that I am not going to come close to my goal of an average of a book a week this year. I know this because I have only read one book this year and that was a re-read. I have book shelves half-filled with unread books and every evening before bed I go into the office, turn on the light and stand, barefoot, until my toes go numb with cold trying to find a title I actually feel like reading. I have started six or seven books this year but have no desire to finish any of them.

I would ask you all for some suggestions but I probably wouldn’t read them. What I will take are suggestions on how to get past my reader’s/writer’s block.

I hate waiting. Not the fifteen people in the queue ahead of you at the post office kind of waiting, but real waiting.  Like knowing you have the winning lottery numbers but having to wait until Saturday to find out for sure. Like thinking you’ve failed an exam but you won’t know the results until a week from Friday.

At the moment I am doing a lot of waiting.

On top of the everyday waiting I’ve grown used to (waiting for S to get home from work, waiting for my favourite show to come on TV, etc) there seems to be a lot more immediate, impatient waiting going on than usual. For example, I am always desperately waiting for the end of the work day / week, and I mean that sincerely. The wait for the clock to tick over to home time at the end of my work day seems the longest wait of all…

What else am I waiting for?

SPRING and then SUMMER!

My 30th (I know, right?) birthday in May.

Our Fantastic Grand USA Adventure, also in May.

Someone to finally, finally give me a permanent job.

…Well, I could really go on forever.

What about you? What are you waiting for?

cake for breakfast!

And, I don’t even feel guilty about it!

Why not? Well, because it’s this cake:

Citrus, Pomegranate, Almond & Poppy Seed Cake by What Katie Ate

This is a picture from her website. I would take a picture myself but I wouldn’t do it justice.

Try this cake. It’s easy to make. It’s a bit different, but I think it’s lovely. Also check out the website above. I haven’t had a chance to explore it properly, but if this recipe is one to judge by then the rest of the site is probably delicious.

I hope you’re having a sunny Sunday just like we are here.

It’s amazing. She is amazing.

Adele – Someone Like You

I heard that you’re settled down
That you found a girl
And you’re married now

I heard that your dreams came true
I guess she gave you things
I didn’t give to you

Old friend why are you so shy
Ain’t like you to hold back
Or hide from the light

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me it isn’t over

Nevermind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don’t forget me I beg
I’ll remember you say
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me it isn’t over

Nevermind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don’t forget me I beg
I’ll remember you say
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

Nothing compares
No worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes
They’re memories made
Who would have known
How bittersweet
This would taste

Nevermind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don’t forget me I beg
I’ll remember you say
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

Nevermind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don’t forget me I beg
I’ll remember you say
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

What can I say? I love Adele. I always have. Her debut album, 19, blew me away. Her second album, 21, is doing the same. This song floors me. Her voice floors me.

Adele’s performace of this song at The Brit awards was phenomenal. James Cordon (the host) said it perfectly – who needs fancy pyrotechnics and backing dancers when you have a voice and a talent like Adele.

On a more personal note I also love Adele because her album was number one the week my niece, Natalie, was born and I bought a copy of the album to give to her when she grows up. Natalie is turning three next Monday (WOW!) and Adele’s newest album is number one this year. I can see my “time capsule” for Natalie getting another addition.

Please watch the video. It’s amazing.

project 1p

Check out this guy’s website: Project 1p

It’s fascinating. He started off with one penny and is attempting to barter/trade/sell up for more and more valuable items each time. So far he has gone from 1 penny to three goldfish to a guitar to a bicycle to £50 and at present he is the owner of 10 square metres of land in Bulgaria.

Who knows what he’ll end up getting in trade for his land? All I know is that I can’t wait to follow his progress.

Fancy owning 10 square meters of land in Bulgaria? Contact him and offer a trade!

surprises

On the whole I like surprises. Providing, of course, it’s not the psycho-clown jumping out at you in a haunted house type of surprise.

This afternoon when S and I returned from a day out and about, just as we were entering the house, we got stopped by a delivery guy with a rather large cardboard box.

Although I did insist it couldn’t possibly be for us (after all, we weren’t expecting any deliveries), he kindly pointed out that unless I was someone else and lived at some other house then yes, in fact, the delivery was for me.

I couldn’t figure what it could be. I couldn’t figure who it could possibly be from.

Then I opened it up the smallest centimetre and saw a glimpse of the most gorgeous sunshine yellow flower petals and I knew instantly.

My dear friend Kate who used to live in Scotland but now lives in Kansas had sent me flowers.

Not just flowers. Sunflowers.

I did not even need to read the enclosed card to verify (although the note she wrote was wonderful, too).

I miss Kate desperately since she moved back to Kansas. I miss our weekly dinners. I miss her smile and her laugh. But, until I get to see her at the end of May these flowers and the memory of receiving them will keep me smiling.

So thank you, Kate, for making this dull February afternoon so much brighter than I could ever have expected it to be.

Aren’t they gorgeous?

Thanks again, Kate. I won’t forget it.

more poetry

I don’t know if you liked the last post, but I am going to give you the poem I wrote for yesterday, anyway.

The Lonely Piper

On a December morning
I walk out into the snow
With no known destination

Dark hills and quiet homes are
Coated in a hush of ice
Features buried in whiteness

In the graveyard mourners stand
A cloud of anguish rising
Like frosted exhalation

Hunched against the wind or
Weighted by memories that
Pull, pull them into darkness

Across the field a piper
Calls a song into the air
His desperate negation

That is all for today.

p.s. The above work is original to me and therefore I own it. Do not steal it or I will own you. Truth.
